Jasper County Magistrate Court

The Jasper County Magistrates’ Court consists of one full-time Magistrate and five part-time Magistrates. Magistrates hold criminal trial jurisdiction over offenses punishable by a fine of up to $500.00 or imprisonment for up to 30 days, or both.

They may also preside over cases transferred from general sessions, with penalties not exceeding one year of imprisonment or a fine of $5,000, or both, upon petition by the solicitor and agreement by the defendant.

Some traffic and criminal statutes confer broader jurisdiction upon summary courts, specifying cases with higher penalty provisions.

Moreover, the Jasper County Magistrate Court has civil jurisdiction for cases involving amounts up to $7,500.00. Additionally, they handle bail setting, preliminary hearings, and issuance of arrest and search warrants.

Unlike circuit courts and probate courts, Magistrate courts do not keep formal records, and proceedings in these courts are conducted summarily.
