In Beaufort County, the courts include the Magistrate Court, Probate Court, Municipal Court, and the U.S District Court of South Carolina.

Magistrate Court is a court of law with civil and criminal jurisdiction. It handles cases where the value of the injury or damage is $7500 or less.

Probate Court has jurisdiction over marriage licenses, estates of deceased persons, guardianship of incapacitated adults, conservatorships of the estates of minors and incapacitated persons, minor settlement of $25,000 and less, and involuntary commitments of mentally ill and/or chemically challenged persons.

Municipal Court is responsible for the adjudication of all misdemeanor offense and violations against city and state laws that occur within city limits. These offenses are subject to a fine not to exceed $500, or imprisonment not to exceed 30 days, or both.

The U.S. District Court of South Carolina is a federal district court whose jurisdiction is the state of South Carolina. Court is held in the cities of Aiken, Anderson, Beaufort, Charleston, Columbia, Florence, Greenville, and Spartanburg.
